EDITING ON PREMIERE PRO

Today we applied the first half of the clip that had been arrange on imovie into premiere. Here we combined the film cinematic and the first half of the film. Then we added in the sound effects that we found online a few weeks ago. (for example = road, people talking, chopping food sound effects) By adding these it gave the film opening a more realistic/believable feeling to it and also makes it more interesting because we're no longer just using one audio. After adding the sound effects into the first half of the film we then added in the glitch effect that we learnt how to do yesterday.

Here is what we've done so far.

IMPROVEMENTS - 2

As mentioned in previous blog posts we have to improve our explanation of the character's relationship and show the hatred that both characters have for each other. We decided to reshoot the
picture pan shot and make it darker. Below is a video that shows how we achieved this.
Inspiration came from the burn book in the movie "Mean girls"

Tomorrow we will replace this scene with the previous picture panning shot scene. Then we will apply the sequence created onto premiere to redo the glitch effect - along with a glitch sound effect.

ATTEMPTING THE GLITCH EFFECT

After discussing with my partner we decided that some shots were too simple and therefore we were afraid that we would lose our target audience's attention. So we came up with this solution - We'll use editing to improve each shot and make it appear more interesting. From this we decided to attempt creating the glitch effect. The glitch effect would suit our film because the "glitch" gives a broken / out of place feeling. Which can be symbolic for the relationship between the two friends.

After watching this video we tried editing the glitch into one of the scenes in the film opening.

Improvements

After listening to comments and suggestions from my friends, one of the main problem was that the relationship between the two characters was unclear (were they friends or enemies?)
My initial plot idea was basically -  a girl losing her best friend and throughout the movie she discovers how her bestfriend was murdered. However with the makeup, clothes and presence of the ghost in the last scene it made it seem like her best friend was the one who killed her. (which initially was not the case) Therefore we will have to solve this problem by reshooting the picture frame scene which we will do tomorrow as well as add layers - (burning picture, match, tearing picture) into parts of the film in order to show their "messed up" relationship. (which is what we started doing today) We decided to change the plot instead of filming the ghost again because my time is limited and we will have to finish editing by the second of February.

ROUGH CUT 2

This morning we worked on shortening the film opening on imovie. We were able to shorten it from 3 minutes to 2 minutes 27 seconds. we did this by deleting unnecessary clips (for example the chicken man scene)

I then asked my brother for feedback and he said that he liked the pan shot of the images which show the characters friendship and the bathroom scene (the one shot scene). However he said that we needed to add more sound effects which we will do through premiere. He said this because the jump scare is not what usually scares him, but the music that creates this build up of tension is what scares him.

After asking Enid she suggested that we should get rid of the front alley way shot because the actress's facial expression broke the tension that was being created. Another thing we had to work on was explaining their relationship as it was quite confusing (friends - to enemy). We will improve this by retaking the pan shot and by scribbling/tearing each picture - making it darker and also timelapse the clock. She also suggested that we should add a layer on top - burning the picture to the first scene to make it darker to set a clear atmosphere.

VERY ROUGH CUT

Today I tried arranging the sequence for the clips using imovie. I decided to edit the rough cut through imovie because it is a much easier and simpler way of quickly arranging ideas. After editing I realised that the video is too long and that I will have to get rid of a few scenes in order to shorten it. After finalising the sequence of the clips and shortening it to 2 minutes I will start applying my ideas onto Premiere and After affects where I will be able to edit in the credits, the cinematic opening as well as the sound effects. Right now the video does not really seem like a thriller (except for the last scene) therefore I will tackle this problem by using colour grading and colour correct each scene so that it will appear more dark and mysterious.

FILMING DAY -VLOG

Today we filmed the opening for our film. We followed the schedule and met at paragon at 9 am. From there, we traveled to our first location. We started filming and finished an hour early. After filming at the first location we traveled back to my house to have lunch and then started filming again at 2.30 pm. We also finished here an hour earlier than expected.

The fact that we were on schedule
There were no accidents - safe
The locals helped us with directions
No traffic

MAIN AUDIO

Arn Andersson created a beautiful composition called "Sad epic emotional music - farewell life". I thought that this piece would really suit our film because as soon as I heard it I felt really touched. The piece was both sad and beautiful which was exactly the message that I want to communicate about the character's relationship in the film. Therefore after decided I tried searching for Arn Andersson's contact information.  From this I found a few details on youtube and that he wrote "For non-profit projects, you can use my music for free, as long as you clearly give me credit with links to my channel and website" So from this I will be adding his name into the credits of the film along with providing his youtube link here https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0Dn8O3Sc6-VemDJTItDL0A
PREPARATION FOR TOMORROW - FILMING DAY

    BEFORE

    AFTER

For the bedroom scene we decided that we will be using my maid's bedroom. To begin with, I had to move all the boxes and unwanted furniture from her room into another room. Then I thought that her bed sheets gave an "old thai country" vibe which I thought would not suit the main character as she is a young girl who is still studying and lives in the city. Therefore I took pillows and blankets from my bedroom to decorate hers. I then found a few tables in my house and moved it into her room (eg. The 3 tables at back).  Then the tables looked quite empty so I decorated these using dolls, a tv, pictures, and a book. I used a note book to emphasise the fact that she is still a student. I used the dolls to show that she is young and innocent. I used the picture frames to show the strong relationship she and her best friend had. Lastly, I thought the wall at the back looked quite empty and boring so I added a painting to give the room a splash of colour.

ANALYSING SUPERNATURAL/HORROR THRILLER

Today in class I analysed how the micro-elements in "Insidious" are used to create a tense mood/atmosphere. I did this in order to understand the conventions of this type of thriller further in order to make any small adjustments to each shot before filming this Sunday. For this film I analysed the first 5 minutes.

SOUND

The movie begins with the the name of the production company and the credits. When the credits appear we hear this creepy sound effect. The creepy sound effect used here sets an eerie atmosphere and straight away tells the audience that this is a horror film.

In this scene we hear the slow ticking sound of the metronome. This slow repetitive ticking sound is used to start the build up of tension before other sound effects are used. By using the sound effects from a metronome instead of a scary soundtrack allows the audience to feel safe before the climax is reached and the ghost is revealed. This is what helps create the jump scare because audiences are unaware of the danger that is to come.

CAMERA

The film begins with an establishing shot of the setting. From this shot we can see that the house is isolated as its surroundings are dark. Because of this isolation the audience will feel a sense of hopelessness for the characters as they believe that the character's will be alone without help. In addition this low angle shot makes the house look scary and intimidating because of its large scale and height.

A close up shot is used to focus on the character's facial expression to show his fears and worries. This is used to build up tension and raise questions by the viewers about what is making the character feel this much amount of fear. It also shows the details of the character's features and we are able to learn a few things about the character's personality. For example in this shot we learn that the character doesn't take care of himself much as he doesn't shave. This may indicate that he's spending his time taking care of other matters, like for example the fact that his son is about to be possessed.

MIS-EN-SCENE

A photograph is used in this scene to reveal the ghost. In this photograph we see and innocent kid who is wearing a white shirt, while the ghost is wearing black. The white shirt symbolises youth and innocence while the black symbolises danger and death. From this the audiences are able to identify who's the protagonist and who's the antagonist. In addition, the fact that the antagonist is behind the protagonist and the character is not aware of the danger makes the audience feel scared and worried for the character.

In this shot we see the interior design of the house. The green wallpaper used along with the brown wood makes the house look old fashioned. This could mean that the house is old and that there has been other families that have lived here before this family moved in. Therefore the fact that there is history in this house makes the house seem scary and mysterious as audiences along with the characters are unaware of what may have happened in this house. In addition, the dim lighting used symbolises the small amount of hope the characters have.

EDITING

Editing is used here to create the smoke effect when the character walks past the credits. The smoke effect creates a spooky atmosphere and is used to represent "ghost". Straight away the audience is informed that there is paranormal activity in the house. The smoke/ fade effect may also be used to symbolise death and how life fades when there is a disturbance.

In this shot we see the boy from the perspective of the camera. The fact that the boy is in the middle of the box reminds the audience that he's the main focus of the plot of the movie and that everything that happens evolves around him. Also, the black and white effect makes the boy appear lifeless. This makes the character seem vulnerable and makes the audience feel worried for him.

CREDIT STRUCTURE

Today I used adobe after effects to create the credit structure for the opening of our film. I used after effects instead of premiere to do this because after effects has the burn film effect which premiere doesn't. I created each title using the optimus princeps font and then using the burn film effect I had to adjust the intensity of the burn for each clip. Below is  a video of what I have done so far.

I will try creating this this clip again and changing the timing of the opacity decrease at the end so that it does not fade to black as fast. Also, I will have to adjust the title "Friend" so that it aligns with the other titles, as well as adjust each title a little lower so that it is in the centre.

EDITING USING PREMIERE

Today in class I started editing in premiere. I added the Studio title which I've downloaded off of youtube along with a cinematic title that I created yesterday. For the studio title I started by researching different studios and then picked which would most suit my film. After discussing with Jasper we've decided that we'll be using Lionsgate. We thought that lionsgate would most suit our film because it is well know for creating movies like "saw, cabin in the woods and sinister". Also the intro doesn't give off a "friendly" vibe like "universal pictures" or "dreamworks".

After I found a suitable title clip on youtube I had to colour correct it in premiere because the clip was too colourful and I did not want this to affect the creepy atmosphere created from the sound effects. After trimming and editing the clip I added different sound effects in order to create tension and create the mood/atmosphere of the film.

FILM COMPANY CINEMATIC

Today In class I created a cinematic opening using after effects.

I started by creating a text layer using the font we selected earlier "optimus princeps".  After this I created a rectangle shaped box to surround the text. From this I deleted the corners and the sides of the box.

I then found a studio reflection image and added it behind the title. Then I used the CC blobbylize and CC glass effect to give the title a 3D effect.  I also colour corrected the title and the effects and made it black and white.

From this I added the particle effect and adjusted it so that it wouldn't cover the name of film company. I then had to adjust the contrast and sharpen the particle effect in order to make it look better.

Here is a screen recording showing how I created the cinematic opening.

SELECTING THE CREDIT FONT

Today we've shortlisted a few fonts from a free font website - http://www.dafont.com
From this we discussed which would be most suitable and as a result we came to a conslusion that we'll be using the Optimus Princeps font by Manfred Klein. This Font allows there to be a punctuation at the end unlike the Assassin font. Also since this is a horror thriller based on a story about friendship we didn't want a font that would be too dramatic. That is why we decided not to use Constantine as it is too bold and seems intimidating. We also didn't want it to look too calm and settling to the eyes as this is still a horror film so we decided not to use the Cinzel font which gives off a smooth and relaxing vibe. The Optimus Princeps font is not too dramatic or settling to the eyes, that is why this is the most suitable font out of the ones we have shortlisted.

DECIDING THE MOVIE TITLE

Our story is about a young teenage girl who loses her best friend. Their close relationship is portrayed throughout the story when she recollects a series of memories of her friend. We also learn about how her best friend's death came to be towards the end of the story. Since this is a movie based on two friends we came up with 3 movie titles and debated which one most suited out story.

To help us come up with title ideas we started by researching several popular horror films online. From this we found that their titles tend to be very simple yet informative. For example we automatically associate the word "unfriended" with social media based applications like Facebook, Skype etc.

Since this is a movie based on two friends we came up with 3 movie titles and debated which one most suited out story.

THE RETURN   We thought that this would make a good title as the main character's best friend returns to her as a ghost. However this title is quite vague as questions like "the return of what?" are raised. Also, by having "the" before return makes it seem a little dramatic.

REMEMBER ME  We thought that this would be a suitable title as throughout the film the main character constantly has flashbacks of her best friend so she is constantly being reminded that her friend is dead. However, "remember me" gives a romantic vibe and will not suit the plot of our story. In addition, there is already a movie with the title "Remember me" which is a romantic film.

FRIEND.  - We thought that this would be a good title as it instantly tells us that this will be a movie about a friendship. I like that it's "Friend" rather than "Friends" because her best friend has died therefore it is a singular noun. Also the full stop at the end emphasises this idea of loneliness. Because of all these reasons we've decided that this would be the most appropriate title for our horror film.

SELECTING THE MAIN ACTRESS

The main actress plays a teenage girl (age around 16-17) who loses her best friend through an accident. Below are three girls who I considered for this role.  For this role we are looking for "innocent" looking girls because this will help make the audience feel worried and sympathise for the character if something tragic happens.

PATTY

- Mid length - Brown Hair
- Dark brown eyes
- Age : 15

I picked Patty because she looks very young and has cute features that make her look innocent. Patty is fully Thai which makes her suitable for the role. However, she has brown hair but we are looking for girls with long black hair. Also, patty is 15 and may be too young for the role.

CLAIRE

- Long Black Hair
- Dark brown eyes
- Age : 17

I picked claire because like patty she has very cute features which make her look innocent. Also I wanted someone who had Long black hair because thai girls generally have long black hair. However claire isn't thai, she's taiwanese and it is obvious that she does not look thai. Therefore claire might not be suitable for this role.

TAN

- Long Black Hair
- Dark brown eyes
- Age : 16

I picked Tan because her sharp features raise a sense of mysteriousness to the character. She is also very pretty and cute which makes her suitable for this role of an "innocent girl" .  Also, Tan has long black hair which was what we wanted. Unlike Claire, Tan is fully Thai and therefore is suitable for this role.

After several discussions we've decided that Tan will be the most suitable for this role. We've contacted Tan and she is free to film on either the 28th or the 29th of January. The problem with this is that the rough cut is due on the 25th therefore we will tackle this problem by preparing the font and sound effects before hand and ready to be used in adobe premiere. So that we will be ready to submit the final 2 minute opening clip on the 2nd of February.

SELECTING THE GHOST

After selecting the main actress we had to find someone to play the role of the ghost in the very last scene. Since the story is about two best friends we wanted their close relationship to seem believable and not forced. Therefore we asked Tan's best friend Dee to play the role of the ghost. She agreed and says that she'll be available on the 28th or the 29th as well.

CREATING A CHARACTER

We wanted to create a character that would appeal to our target audience. To do this we had to search films that had the same concept as our film. In this case, it was "supernatural/horror thriller". Using YouGov profiles we looked up movies like Insidious and Mama and found that the demographics for both target audiences were between the ages 18-29. By using this information we've decided to target the film towards teenagers and young adults.

From this we drew a mind map in order to create a suitable character for the film.

After drawing a mind map we've decided that the character will be a young teenage girl who still goes to school. She will be pretty, smart and innocent. However, she will be a sad character as she does not have a family and lost her best friend recently.

COSTUME-MAIN/GHOST

Since we will be filming in different locations in Bangkok like at the market, on the bus, near the road. By creating a character that dresses and follows thai culture, hopefully the clip will seem more believable through the audience's eyes.
