ANALYSING SHOTS FROM THE FILM "HEAT"

An over the shoulder shot was used in this scene to makes the audience feel as if they were one of the supporting characters in the movie and were being threatened along with the others as well. This makes them feel sympathy for the other characters.

A low angle shot was used to emphasise the main character’s power at this very moment.  As a result this makes the audience feel intimidated and perhaps even powerless.

An eye level shot was used here make the audience feel as if the character was looking at them and pointing the gun to them. This makes them feel scared and threatened.

A close up shot was used here to give importance to the situation. This makes the audience focus as well as wonder what could possibly lie behind that door.

An Extreme close- up shot was used here to make the audience focus on his facial expression and also make them wonder what the actor is looking at  or searching for.

A very high angle shot was used here to basically just set the scene. It enables the spectator to gain a view that may not be possible for a character. This allows the audience to view the whole room taking in the size/ number of people/ set/ time of day etc.

An overhead shot or a bird’s eye view was used here to make the supporting actors (victims) appear weak and powerless. This makes the audience feel sympathy for the characters, as well as frustration as they are unable to help.

This shot is created from the character's perspective giving us a glimpse of how the actors could possibly be feeling. This makes the audience feel scared for them as it has been shot in such a way that the audience is made to believe that they are in that situation as well.

MEDIA STUDIES - 1 MINUTE CLIP EVALUATION

PLAN - INTERROGATION

For this 1 minute clip challenge my group created a clip based on the beginning of an integration. The clip consists of 2 main characters the antagonist and the protagonist. (so the protagonists being me who gets integrated while the antagonist is sunsun who integrates me.

WWW:

In this clip my aim was to build up tension through the use of editing and sound effects. To begin with, for editing i achieved this by slowing down each clip to 70% in order to make each movement slower. I did this so that the audience would feel annoyed and uncomfortable as each movement was slower than usual. I also added “blur to black”  transitions to some of the clips in order to make the link between each clip smoother and also help the audience not lose their attention of the clip as well as break the tension.

For the sound, after searching for several soundtracks from movies and testing out soundtracks from movies like batman and interstellar i finally found one “ghost like” soundtrack that fits perfectly with this clip and helped build suspense. Also, At the beginning of the clip i added a “clock ticking” sound effect which i edited to fit the tapping hand gestures. By doing this i believe as a result i was sort of in a way able to fill an “award gap” in the clip and also help in the build up of tension as i made it clear to the audience that the protagonist was waiting. In addition, to build tension further and create more more dramatic effect i used cinematic sound effects (eg. BOOOM) at one part of the clip to bring importance to that scene as the protagonist is finally shown.

EBI:

However, there are things which I wished I had done better. For example one problem i found throughout editing this clip was that we did not have enough footage to cover a whole minute well enough. Therefore i had to tackle this problem by using repetitive movements like for example  “the finger tapping scene” in order to cover a whole minute.

Secondly, another problem was that i wish i played with lighting and played around with colour effects for example made the clip black and white abit more. This would have helped add more mysteriousness to the clip.

CONCLUSION:

However, in conclusion i think i did well in creating a clip based on the beginning of an integration as although the outcome was not what i had pictured i still feel successful as it is my first time using adobe premiere pro and i also believe i was successful in building up tension throughout the clip.
